I have kept almost every journal I’ve ever made (some 30-odd years worth!)
My stockpile of journals include everything from random musings, to descriptions of my experiences living with dystonia and trauma, to sketches, etc...
Over the next 12 weeks*, I’m going to share highlights from The Vault- writings, drawings, and more!
I will also post deeper dives on Patreon over the next few months, describing the context and stories behind some of the Bits ‘n Pieces I share here.
*If you enjoy these types of posts, I will happily continue to feature artwork from the vault after the 12 week mark!
This gallery of playful portraits came from a 2016 notebook, 6 years before I started painting.
I have always enjoyed drawing faces, and my preferred medium for portraits has historically been pencil/charcoal. Although I believe I started with a regular ol’ blue pen in 8th grade..
It is a fun challenge to experiment with other mediums, as I have more recently with paint, and in 2016 with marker.

On the subject of portraits, I currently have 5 pieces available in my Etsy shop!
To nerd out for a moment- it’s really cool to see this particular art form evolve over time and noticing similarities (as well as differences) between older and newer pieces.
One similarity is I really am drawn (ha!) to adding weird, odd, or even disturbing elements.. especially when adding color.
Something about the addition of color beckons me toward experimentation and play.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s peek into The Vault!
Until soon,
Riv
